Top 3 Best Quotes From Stoicism That Will Change Your Life

April 14, 2018

Stoicism is a type of philosophy that originated in ancient Greece and below are the 3 best quotes from stoicism that will change everything for you.

1. “Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.”

The above quote means that we need to take control of our thoughts. The fact is that we have continuous control over everything in the mind. Irrespective of the events occurring in your surroundings, you can choose a perception of the events that are occurring, and that is what will determine your feelings towards those events. The quote also entails the fact that happiness of any individual is not tied to external factors, but is instead dependent on what the person is thinking.

When thinking, it is important to avoid a few things in the thought processes. All that is irrelevant and random needs to be avoided as well as everything that is malevolent and self-important! We need to become accustomed to fine-tuning our thoughts; thus when anyone asks about we are thinking, we can truthfully offer an answer in an instant.

2. “How much time he gains who does not look to see what his neighbor says or does or thinks, but only at what he does himself, to make it just and holy.”

The above quote means that we shouldn’t seek others’ approval and remain in our own life, within the present moment. This is a massive problem right now for so many people suffering from anxiety as much time and energy is being spent trying to please others.

Stoicism teaches that worries and concerns about the views of others is just a total waste of time. We need to know that neither disapproval nor admiration is important as none of it has any effect on the internal value of whomever or whatever is being assessed or judged.

Happiness of the self is not dependent on the opinion or approval of others. However, we all have an innate desire to be liked and accepted by others. We tend to work real hard all our lives to be able purchase things that we may not really desire, only for the sole reason of impressing others, whom we quintessentially may not even care about.

It is therefore important to live a life that does not seek the approval of others. Your basis of happiness and contentment should not be outsourced to others. After you start doing all the things that you like and stop looking for the endorsement of others, everything will change for the better for you.

3. “If a cucumber is bitter. Throw it away. There are briars in the road. Turn aside from them. This is enough. Do not add.”

These quotes from stoicism help us learn different ways in which to overcome obstacles and how to convert them into opportunities. When dealing with different hindrances in our paths, we need to do it swiftly, and do not waste time in whining about the obstruction.

All those who hinder our path need to become irrelevant. It may be possible for them to block our actions, but it is not possible to impede our nature or our intentions. We have the capacity to accommodate, change, and adapt. The mind can adjust and convert the obstacle into an asset, thereby allowing us to keep moving forward.

Obstacles and setbacks make me feel like a failure mainly because I have not yet learned how to deal with them properly or move past them. I overthink and over analyze every hindrance. I need to figure out how to not do that.

“Remember how long thou hast been putting off these things, and how often thou hast received an opportunity from the Gods and yet dost not use it; thou must now, at last, perceive of what Universe thou art a part, and of what Administrator of the Universe thy existence is an efflux, and that a limited time is fixed for thee which, if thou dost not use for clearing away the clouds from thy mind, it will go, and thou wilt go, and it will never return.” – Marcus Aurelius
