Lately, inside our anxiety group coaching sessions, we’ve been exploring a question that can completely change the way someone approaches recovery: What is your anxiety asking from you?
For many people, anxiety recovery becomes centered around one goal, which is simply getting rid of how they feel. We want the symptoms to stop, the thoughts to quiet down, the body to calm, and life to feel normal again. But sometimes things begin to shift when we stop asking only, “How do I make this go away?” and begin becoming curious about what our anxiety needs from us.
What Does Your Anxiety Need From You?
That does not mean every symptom contains a hidden message that needs to be decoded. It simply means there may be parts of your life, your behavior, your relationships, or your relationship with yourself that deserve more attention than they have been receiving. Sometimes understanding what your anxiety needs requires looking beyond the symptom itself.
We often associate nervous-system safety with slowing down, resting, breathing, meditating, and trying to calm ourselves. Those things can absolutely have a place, but they are not always the whole picture. Sometimes your anxiety needs something very different. It may need you to become more engaged with life again, rebuild trust in yourself, or stop organizing every decision around how anxious you might feel.
Moving Beyond Constant Symptom Monitoring
When anxiety has been present for a long time, the days can quietly begin revolving around monitoring. You may find yourself repeatedly checking how you feel, whether a sensation is still there, whether today is better than yesterday, or what a particular symptom might mean. Eventually, so much attention gets directed inward that it becomes difficult to hear anything else.
This is why understanding what your anxiety needs can sometimes mean asking a different question altogether. Instead of constantly investigating the body, it may be more useful to ask what is missing from the way you are currently living.
Anxiety Recovery Is Not Always About Calming Down
One of the ideas I explore in this episode is that safety is not always passive. Sometimes safety does come from rest and reassurance, but other times your anxiety needs experiences that remind your system that you can participate in life without constantly protecting yourself from it.
Recovery can involve gradually changing the signals you repeatedly send yourself through the way you move, respond, connect, choose, and live. That does not mean forcing yourself to feel better. It means becoming more intentional about the relationship you are building with anxiety and with life itself.
Listen Before You Try to Fix Anxiety
Many anxiety sufferers become very skilled at fixing. There is always another technique, strategy, meditation, supplement, video, podcast, or explanation to search for. But what if the next stage of your recovery involves listening differently rather than searching harder? What if your anxiety needs you to stop treating every uncomfortable moment like another problem that must immediately be solved?
That is what I want to explore with you in today’s episode. We’ll look at several possibilities that may help you understand why anxiety can continue showing up even when you feel like you have been doing everything “right,” and how a more curious relationship with anxiety may help remove some of the confusion and pressure around recovery.
