“He Who Is Infected With The Fear Of Illness, Is Already Infected With The Disease Of Fear.” – Michel De Montaigne

The fear of illness can many times cement the identity we roam the earth with which is health anxiety. Health anxiety (or hypochondria) can cripple a persons ability to see a symptom of anxiety for what it is. Instead, the feeling arises and catastrophic thinking and rumination begins, many times without let up until reassurance of some sort is given.

Having suffered for 6 years from health anxiety, I know very well the fear of illness. In fact it was the reason I wasted so much of my time questioning the health of each of my organs, instead of becoming conscious of the external world. Patterns can be broken though, and this fear of illness cycle is most certainly a pattern that has developed.

As someone with health anxiety or GAD goes through Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and gets to a better emotional place, how could there be any doubt left in themselves? The patterns have been altered, past emotionally traumatic memory has been re-ramed, and the future looks good for a past sufferer! Or does it.

When a person overcomes anxiety a large part of them dies. The old identity or character they once were is replaced with a brand new one. If there are fragments of uncertainty left within a sufferer though, the trust factor in the new identity isn’t complete. If the trust factor in the new identity isn’t complete the person will go back and forth like a yo-yo between ideas and thoughts.
