What If This Symptom Is Actually Something Serious?
Welcome back, my peaceful warriors. Today, we are tackling a thought that I know so many of you are dealing with right now. It’s an interpretation that keeps our hypersensitivity alive and keeps us in a state of fight-or-flight: “What if this symptom is actually something serious?”
I’ve been there. I was there for years. The fear makes you feel like ignoring it would be reckless instead of just anxious. But here is the truth: that thought isn’t protecting you. It’s the anxiety cycle doing what it does best, making the improbable feel inevitable. We get so attached to living with these stress hormones on a regular basis that when we finally start to calm down and relax, that keeps us afraid, too. It is an endless fear loop.
Let’s break down why this happens and what to do instead.
The “This One Is Different” Trap
Every symptom your anxiety has ever hyper-focused on felt like “the one” in that moment, didn’t it? But that feeling of certainty isn’t evidence; it’s a symptom of the anxious mind. It is not factual information about your body.
This is your inner protector, let’s call him Fred. Fred is trying to trap you back into this idea that this specific sensation is dangerous. When you start to prioritize the idea that this could be true for you, everything changes. Your physiology changes, your psychology changes, and the way you view the world changes. The muscle tension creeps into your neck and upper body, and rigidity takes over.
We need to start seeing this from the perspective of: “This is my inner protector, this isn’t fact about my physical body.” Ooh, that’s a more-than-anxiety moment right there, take it in.
“Checking doesn’t buy you safety, it only rents it out.”
Why Uncertainty Is Your Actual Target
Googling, checking symptoms, monitoring your body, and seeking reassurance gives you relief for minutes, sometimes seconds. But then the doubt creeps back in, often stronger than before. That is the loop keeping you stuck, not the symptom itself.
You aren’t really afraid of the lump in your throat, the muscle twitches, the twinge, or the dizziness. You are afraid of not knowing for certain. And the hard truth is that 100% certainty was never available to anyone.
To overcome this, you have to practice dancing with doubt:
- Bring the Symptoms With You: You can go for that walk, take that drive, or step into a new experience right now with the symptoms you’re currently experiencing. If you do them feeling like, “I can bring them with me,” that is called recovery.
- Recognize Anxiety Creates Real Sensations: Things like adrenaline, muscle tension, and hypervigilance produce genuine physical feelings. Real sensations don’t always mean real danger. Learning to sit with that distinction is where recovery lies.
- Use the Energy: When you have adrenaline and stress hormones running through your body, you will be surprised to learn that you can take that energy and use it to live a more fulfilling life instead of letting fear dictate your actions.
Practiced Trust Beats Permanent Vigilance
You can’t out-monitor anxiety into safety. What actually works is building evidence over time that you can feel a sensation, not act on the fear, and come out the other side okay. That is how the nervous system relearns safety.
Practiced trust means saying, “I am safe in this moment,” and putting your emotional intensity into that belief. It’s practicing being in the moment with what’s around you again, and again, and again.
Next time that thought shows up, “What if this is the one?” remember that urgency is the anxiety talking, not the evidence. You don’t need certainty to move forward. You just need to practice sitting with doubt without letting it run the show.
